It's tax season...Once Again.... Where we All come together as a nation to pay our taxes to our Dear Uncle Sam... Did you know Uncle Sam was a real person?!
Sam Wilson in 1813 is the reason the United States was given its nickname "Uncle Sam." Turns out, he was from Troy,New York. He was a meat packer and stamped US on his barrels of beef that he supplied for the United States Army during the War of 1812. He had them stamped US for the United States but the soldiers started calling it 'Uncle Sam's' grub instead. The story spread and it eventually became the nickname for the US Federal Government as we affectionately call it today.
Thomas Nast (1840-1902) started changing the image of Uncle Sam as we know him now with the suit made of stars-and-stripes and his white beard. He was a political cartoonist. He was also given the credit for the DemocraticParty(Donkey) and RepublicanParty(Elephant)
as well as the Santa Claus image we so love.
